Organizational Unit Overview:

The Department of English (english.ecu.edu) is a vibrant and energetic community of teachers, scholars, researchers, and writers. The departments interdisciplinary nature is one of its strengths, and our students benefit from a breadth of faculty expertise across many areas of study. Our faculty and students pursue interests and scholarship in literature, creative writing, technical and professional communication, rhetoric and composition, multicultural and transnational literature, folklore, film studies, linguistics, and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Our department offers four degrees: a B.A. in English; a B.S. in Professional Writing and Information Design (PWID); an MA in English; and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication. The department also offers undergraduate minors in English, creative writing, film studies, linguistics, and PWID. The department also supports general education for all majors across the university through Writing Foundations courses and courses that contribute to writing intensive, humanities, and social science general education requirements. The Department of English works closely with other departments whose degree programs include our courses. Our faculty and students are important partners in advancing the universitys strategic plan area of distinction as a cultural champion in our region and beyond.

The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (thcas.ecu.edu) is home to 16 academic departments, a number of research centers, and over twenty interdisciplinary programs (thcas.ecu.edu/undergraduate-programs/) such as Ethnic Studies, International Studies, and a certificate in Global Understanding.

Job Duties:

The Department of English at East Carolina University (http://english.ecu.edu) is seeking to fill one position with the title of Teaching Instructor or Teaching Assistant Professor (depending upon qualifications) specializing in composition to begin in August 2025. This full-time non-tenure-track position is for fall and spring semesters of the 2025-2026 academic year only, with the possibility of subsequent appointments. The full-time teaching load is typically four courses per semester. Teaching will consist of face-to-face courses, with the possibility that some online courses may be assigned, depending on department and university need. Depending upon a candidates credentials, as well as the needs in the department, the Chair may assign other courses besides composition. Service to the university, community, and profession is expected. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications, and full-time positions include benefits.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Minimum qualifications for appointment as Teaching Instructor include an MA (or foreign equivalent) in English or a related field, including but not limited to Rhetoric/Composition, Writing Studies, Technical Communication, or Linguistics.

A PhD or MFA (or foreign equivalent) in English or a related field, including but not limited to Rhetoric/Composition, Writing Studies, Technical Communication, or Linguistics, is required for appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor.

Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of and experience in teaching courses in first-year writing and writing about the disciplines.


License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of and experience in teaching courses in linguistics (e.g., semantics, syntax, morphology, or phonetics/phonology). Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of and experience with online teaching and online pedagogies and technologies.
