Job Description Summary:
KU School of Medicine is seeking outstanding basic science faculty to join the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology. This is a 12-month, full-time, Basic Science, Tenure-track position to develop and conduct an independent research program and also to engage in teaching medical and graduate students and serve the KUMC community. The appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, commensurate with experience.

The department seeks strong applicants with demonstrated track records of publications and interdisciplinary collaborations using contemporary approaches to gene editing and genomic investigations, and their application to cellular and organismal models. The area of research is open, but institutional strengths include metabolism, cancer, neuroscience, reproduction, and liver and kidney disorders. Opportunities exist and are encouraged for collaborations with faculty in the KU Cancer Center, Kansas Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, the KUMC Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, the Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research, and departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Neurology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Medicine among others. The position also allows for a close relationship with our Transgenic Facility and may serve in an advisory capacity.

The position allows for teaching in the medical school curriculum and graduate programs including PhD programs in Cell Biology and Anatomy, Physiology, and Neuroscience. Applications will be considered from early-stage investigators. Academic appointment, compensation, and start-up package at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, will be competitive and commensurate with experience, scientific accomplishments, and needs.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain an externally funded research program in the area of developmental neuroscience research, broadly defined. Establish collaborations with KUMC colleagues in the basic sciences and partner with faculty in clinical departments including Pediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry and Medicine. Collaborate with other faculty members as part of interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Contribute to the educational enrichment of medical and/or graduate students in topics related to neurosciences. Be involved in graduate student education for the programs and the KUMC Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in the Biomedical Sciences. Prepare and present lectures, participate in small group teaching. There is also the potential for teaching faculty, residents, and students in the partnering clinical departments.
  • Serve on committees i.e., serve on academic or service committees and contribute to other projects assigned by the Chair. Participate in departmental committees, activities, and faculty meetings. Provide other services to the school, university, and community, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with external investigators in area of expertise. Participate in journal peer review, study section service, and organization of national and international scientific events.
Required Qualifications:

Education:
  • PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent in one of the biological sciences, research experience in neuroscience and developmental neurobiology.
Work Experience:
  • PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree in biological sciences related to cellular neurobiology
  • History of or potential to develop an externally funded research program.
  • Evidence of high quality, peer-reviewed publications in related areas
  • Ability to work both individually and collaboratively within a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Documented expertise in neuroscience research using cutting-edge technologies.
Preferred Qualifications:

Work Experience:
  • Strong publication record and success in obtaining NIH or other types of extramural funding.
  • 4-5 years of experience in academic or private health-related research environment.
  • Evidence of effective teaching in courses related to neuroscience programs; potential to participate in teaching medical students and to mentor and supervise graduate students.
