Essential Duties

Administrative:

  • Serves as academic advisor to assigned students and makes referral to appropriate person, as needed.
  • Attends faculty meetings and others as designated.
  • Assists in maintaining organization of course materials and other assigned duties.
  • Participates in self-study evaluation for state and national nursing accreditation.
  • Assists with student and faculty recruitment activities.
  • Makes appropriate referral of students who need additional personal assistance.
  • Initiates and promotes collegial relationships within the program and college and with members of other disciplines.
  • Serves on program, department, college, and university committees as elected or appointed.

Instruction:

1. Planning

  • Assists in planning objectives, content, and learning experience for respective courses.
  • Assists in planning for learning experiences.
  • Plans clinical assignments for students to meet specific individual needs.
  • Attends didactic classes when appropriate in order to better plan clinical assignments.
  • Assists in securing visiting lecturer and resource persons.
  • Assumes responsibility for classroom preparation

2. Guidance of Learning Activities

  • Guides students in learning activities in the clinical area. Be with or available to students at all times. Plan with students for patient assignments in clinical area. Hold and participate in pre- and post-conference discussion periods for students in clinical area.
  • Serves as role model for professional behavior.
  • Assists student in making application of theoretical knowledge to the clinical situation.
  • Assists with and/or teaches nursing skills in laboratory sessions.
  • Assumes responsibility for teaching assigned classes.

3. Evaluation of Student Progress

  • Constructs appropriate test questions.
  • Assists in planning, administering, scoring, and analyzing tests.
  • Observes and evaluates student performance in clinical area.
  • Conducts impromptu planned conferences with students, as needed.
  • Keeps students apprised of their performance at all times.
  • Writes final evaluations of students.
  • Cooperates with faculty in evaluation of teaching methods and evaluation tools as to their effectiveness in meeting course objectives.
  • Assists in development of new methods and/or evaluation tools to improve course instruction.
  • Assists students in self-evaluation.

4. Evaluation of Own Teaching

  • Critically appraises student evaluation of teaching.
  • Accepts and utilizes evaluation of peers and department chair.
  • Participates in self-evaluation for further professional growth.
  • Continues to improve clinical and/or teaching expertise through formal study, clinical practice, or continuing education. (Must attend a minimum of 10 contact hours or its equivalent per year in an area of clinical or class responsibility).

Research:

  • Interprets current research reports on nursing and related fields.
  • Assists students with research projects when indicated and with guidance of faculty with greater research background.
  • Assists in gathering data concerning health needs of the consumer.
  • Reads to increase knowledge of research methods as applicable to educator role.
  • Participates in research with guidance and as times permits.

Service:

  • Represents the Department of Nursing when opportunity arises or as assigned.
  • Serves on committees, when assigned.
  • Participates in community and professional organizations.

Other:

  • Other responsibilities may be assigned by the department chair or dean

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current unencumbered registered nursing licensure to practice in Mississippi and other states where clinical students practice.
  • A Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • Competent in nursing knowledge and practice as evidenced by records and job performance.
  • At least one year experience in nursing service.
  • Meets current clinical agency requirements (such as criminal background check, drug screen, immunizations, etc.).

Job Description Summary

Full-time, 10 month faculty position in the Baccalaureate Nursing Program. A minimum of a master’s degree in nursing, an unencumbered Mississippi RN license, a satisfactory criminal background check, and experience in medical/surgical nursing. Responsibilities include classroom teaching and clinical instruction.
